Why does the Contact Form 7 is not sending emails?

The Contact Form 7 (CF7) is the most popular WordPress plugin used for sending millions of emails every day. It usually works flawless, but sometimes it happens that some bugs may appear during the process. There are basically two main reasons why Contact Form 7 is not sending emails:

  • A problem with the server where your WordPress is hosted.

  • A mistake in emails configuration of the receivers’ local computers.

The list of specific reasons why Contact Form 7 is not sending emails is long. But, before you begin to identify the problem at a serious level, check whether you really need a compiled HTML fix. Why? Well, it may turn out that the defect is a trifle.

Make sure you use an email address that belong to your domain

There are hosting providers who require some special settings when it comes to sending emails via WordPress. It is important, for example, to use a suitable From address. Fill it out with the email address that belongs to the same domain as your WordPress site. To do this, go to your admin panel and then:

  • Go to Forms,

  • Edit a chosen form,

  • Search for an Email tab,

  • Insert a suitable From address, for example: noreply@yourdomain.com.

If you don’t have an email that belongs to the same domain as your WordPress page, this may be a reason why Contact Form 7 is not sending emails. And, if you still want to use a different email domain, for example gmail.com, you need to set up email settings properly.

How to set up WordPress email settings?

Install the WP Mail SMTP plugin. Next, go to SettingsWP Mail SMTP. WordPress will display you the screen with a few fills to fill out. Do it, but remember to choose The other SMTP server while deciding on Mailer option. Then, you will have to give WordPress some more details, for example: the hostname of the SMTP server (in this case, smtp.gmail.com), the SMTP Port (465), the Username (email@gmail.com), Password, and the like.

Contact Form 7 is still not sending emails?

If the CF7 is still messing up, there are some more things you can check before you decide on a serious HTML fix of the problem. For example, check if:

  • The Subject is filled under the Email section of the CF7 interface (some hosting systems reject emails lacking Subjects).

  • Your WordPress works fine, as usually, it is not a Contact Form 7 plugin that fails. Go to a login page of your WordPress website, click on Lost your password?, and check if you got an email from WordPress. Didn’t? You know then, what poses a problem.

  • You are not treated as a spammer. To convince a recipient’s mail servers that your message is legitimate, add additional headings under the Email section of the CF7 interface, for example:

Sender: noreply@yourdomain.com

Reply-To: [your-name] <[your-email]>

  • You set up WPML plugin well if you run a multi language site in wordpress. You can find lots of online tutorials on how to set up a WPML plugin properly.
