Why plugins cause problems on WordPress websites?

WordPress plugins can cause many bugs on your website. Plugin updates, plugin code errors, uninstalling plugins – see what to pay attention to, so that you do not need an HTML help for your page.

Why are plugins updates that problematic?

It all started with the process of accepting extensions that go to the official WordPress repository. Long story short, the creator of the plugin fills out the form and sends the plugin (in the form of a .zip folder) to WordPress moderators. They check if the plugin code agrees with the guidelines, and if everything is okay, they set up a catalog in the official repository for the plugin.

But, plugins need updates, and these are not verified by anyone. The creator of the plugin updates the extension code version, and the change is automatically saved.

Dangerous plugin updates in practice

The best example of the weakness of this process is the situation from a few years ago. The popular Social Media Widget plugged a malicious code containing an ad link. Site owners who have already enabled the plugin update have unknowingly joined the free advertising network. And the WordPress moderators' reacted only after 4 days.

The white screen of death and how to fix it

It happens that, for example, plugins updates cause so-called the white screen of death. The blank page is a sign that your site is not connected to your database. You don’t need an HTML help to fix the bug. As you don’t have an access to your admin panel:

  • Log in to your page via FTP.

  • Search for a folder named /wp-content/plugins.

  • Change its name for whatever you want, e.g.: /wp-content/plugins_old.

  • It will deactivate all the plugins.

  • Then log in to your page normally, as the white screen of death should have already disappeared.

  • Reactivate all the plugins one by one to identify the faulty one.

  • Install the faulty one again, but make sure that its version is free from bugs, updated, and compatible with the new version of WordPress.

If there is a bug on the page related to the plugin, but it is not the white screen of death (so you have an access to the cockpit):

  • Go to your admin panel.

  • Go to Plugins.

  • Turn off all your plugins.

  • Activate them one by one to identify the faulty one.

  • Install the faulty one again, but make sure that its version is free from bugs, updated, and compatible with the new version of WordPress.

Before you uninstall the plugin…

...check if its author has created any specific instructions for doing it. Also, remember about disabling the plugin before uninstalling it. If you remove a plugin incorrectly, some errors may occur on your page.

What else to remember about?

It's better to blow on cold. So, to save on HTML help on your page, remember to always download or update WordPress to the latest version. Also, make sure to backup the site data before each change, such as uninstalling or updating the plugin. Remember that your hosting provider has no obligation to do backup for you.
