What is an SSL certificate?
When users visit your site, their browsers and your site's servers establish a connection. No SSL certificate on the page means that the data that the user leaves on the site can, for example:
be changed by third parties,
be redirected to another place,
be stolen and used by unauthorized persons.
SSL implementation on your website reduces these risks and increases the trust of users to your site.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is an Internet protocol that encrypts the connection between the browser and the page server. This means that the protocol encrypts the data sent to you by the user, and then transmits it securely to the destination.
How does it work?
SSL protocol uses an AES key (for example 256-bit) to encrypt the data. It means that even if the hacker intercepts traffic on your page, it will not be possible to break the algorithm and capture personal information.
How to recognize if the connection is safe?
There are several ways your users can recognize whether the site is secure or not. They can check it through the appearance of the address bar of your web page. It can be, for example, all marked in green (it is usual for Extended Validation certificate). Users can also check if there is an HTTPS protocol in the address bar. But sometimes it happens that SSL certificate is visible only as a padlock next to the page’s address. And vice versa – if the page is not secure, Google will display a Not Secure in the URL bar.
Who should consider SSL implementation?
An SSL certificate is necessary on websites where users leave their data or on which they make Internet payments. Who should especially consider SSL implementation? Institutions such as banks, health centers, online stores, universities, postal applications, city offices, web portals etc.
Remember, that there are 3 main kinds of SSL certificate. If you:
run a small online store, a blog, or a small Internet forum – choose the DV (Domain Validation),
run larger e-commerce, or collect users’ data such as name, address and phone number – choose the OV (Organization Validation); it gives you a higher level of protection than the DV certificate,
work with online banking and online payments – choose the highest level of protection, which is the EV certificate (Extended Validation).
What does Google say?
Google wants to make Internet users feel secure. Especially in the times of E-world, in which we sell and buy on the Internet. For this reason, in 2014 Google announced SSL certificate as a ranking signal. Google flags unsecured websites displaying a Not Secure in their URL bars. It automatically means a lower SEO score for such pages. So, SSL certificate is not only beneficial for your users, but also for your page’s positioning.
